Report on work party Sunday 4 August 2024
A small team of three achieved a good amount of clearing. Some of the hedging hasn't survived, probably inevitable given that the location where we were working slopes steeply down two metres to the road, which means the water table is probably going to be a metre or more below the soil surface. However, a mix of rowan, dogwood, blackthorn (sloe), and hawthorn are doing well and will add to biodiversity as well as strengthening the existing barrier of wire fencing and shrubs.
It was enjoyable, and felt worthwhile.
We plan to return soon to put tree tubes over the smaller plants, and to knock into the ground some of the bamboo canes that have come loose.
We will advertise a return later to do more clearing. Do join us then!
Clearing around native hedging
Please come and help if you can with this project aimed at strengthening our boundary security and improving biodiversity.
Work party on Sunday August 4th before the Cafe from 10 am to 12 noon with free coffee for all volunteers!!
Meet at the Meeting Shed at 10am.
The native hedging planted outside the perimeter fence is in dire need of weeding. We have to be realistic about how much of the other plants and brambles which are smothering them we can clear, and there may have to be a certain amount of Darwinian survival of the fittest saplings! However, we can tilt the balance in their favour!!
You'll need gloves. We'll have tools to share, but it would help if you could bring any one or more of the following: secateurs for brambles, shears for thinner material, and a knife to cut tough weeds near the ground. Don't worry if you can't bring tools - humans are the most important thing in getting the job done!
The first part of the verge from the bottom gate is fairly flat but further up the hill it slopes quite steeply towards the road, so do be careful.
If you arrive later on, walk out of our main gate and up the road (Alexandra Palace Way) until you find us. It's safest to walk on the pavement side. You can check with us where we've already cleared, and where best to join in.
Thanks for all help!
