Hedgehogs

If you've found baby hedgehogs...

If they're in a reasonably safe place, it's best to leave them for the mother to return. You can check later if you're worried they may have been abandoned. Don't pick them up, or your scent may cause the mother to reject them.

If they're in the open, in daylight, and wandering, the mother may have been injured or killed. This makes a more difficult call. You may want to keep an eye on them from nearby.

Have a look at:

RSPCA baby hedgehogs (information)

British Hedgehog Preservation Society (information)

Trent Park Wildlife Rescue Centre (in the centre of Trent Park. Run by experienced volunteers. Nearest tube is Cockfosters (Piccadilly Line), about 0.9 miles away at the edge of the park).

If you've found a lethargic adult hedgehog or a small hedgehog out in daylight in cold weather...

See the advice links above.

The BHPS say (in their FAQ): If you see a hedgehog out in the day, it may be unwell and in need of urgent first aid advice. Follow [the guidance on our website] and then call us as soon as possible on 01584 890 801 for further advice and the numbers of local independent rehabilitators.

A small hedgehog out in daylight late in the year may be searching for food because it doesn't have enough body fat to see it through winter. As above, the best course of action will be to consult a hedgehog organisation.
